Whistleblowers can be rewarded for exposing fraud. In some cases, whistleblowers have been rewarded for revealing information showing waste or fraud by government contractors including violations of federal and state environmental, safety, contracting and other laws during the performance of a government contract.
If their information results in the recovery of public funds, whistleblowers may be given a substantial monetary reward. In a successful lawsuit under the federal False Claims Act, the employee or citizen plaintiff (called a “relator”) may receive a reward of 25-30% of the amount recovered for the government. This reward can be in the millions of dollars for a major project such as a highway.
The whistleblower’s portion of the funds recovered is calculated after the government’s damages are tripled pursuant to the law. The False Claims Act is the single most important tool U.S. taxpayers have to recover the billions of dollars stolen through fraud by U.S. government contractors every year.
